Has anyone ever had issues with a savage not feeding rounds from the magazine correctly? I've got two issues, but I think they may be related.

I've got a savage 11 in a 223. It's never given me problems before but lately it's having trouble feeding every other round. It's an internal mag and since it's every other round, I guessing that it's not feeding correctly from one side of the magazine as the rounds are staggered.

The round often comes out of the magazine but the bolt doesn't catch it properly and it will be angled up too much to feed properly.

I just ordered an aftermarket extractor and hoping that will help. Also, when I removed the extractor the little ball that lies on top of a spring below the extractor got away from me and is somewhere in my basement, so I had to order one of those as well.

May have a magazine spring problem?

I know exactly what you're talking about.

My 30-06 holds 5 rounds with one of them in the tube. I was having this problem, but I figured out if I only put 3 in the mag and one in the tube, I don't have a problem.......so that's how I've solved it.

I never take more than 2 shots at a time anyways, so it isn't bothering me that its a 4 shot gun now.

Yeah, when I shoot at the range I ussually only shoot 3 shot groups, so it's not that big of an issue. I haven't really looked at it close enough to figure out the exact problem. I started to the other night and that's when I lost the part.

I had a Savage .22/250 that had issues similar to yours, I swapped the follower around backwards and tried that, it seemed to help. You might give that a try when you get it back together. Or, you might try tweaking the sheetmetal magazine lips a little(!) bit, as a last resort.

Any Savage shooter than hasn't lost the extractor ball bearing isn't cleaning his bolt enough :D . I've lost two, over the years myself, usually when replacing extractors. Savage turned loose a bunch of bad extractors for awhile, too, so when I got ambitious enough to do something about it, I lost the ball bearing......... A phone call to Savage's parts department got me another bb, and a new extractor, too.

[rquote=1933991&tid=134663&author=golfnut1969]Modified the post above as this not a long action, but a short action. I was thinking the long actions were model 111 and shorts where 110. It's actually a model 11, not 110.
[/rquote]ok that leaves out the long feed issue, I am down to spring now.

I've dealt with Frank once and that was enough. I'll drive to Silex and work with the gunsmith there. He's great.

I shot about 39 rounds thru my Savage 111 GCNS 7mm-08 at the Rifle range in October with no problems or issues....when I went out during Deer Season this year I noticed the gun didn't allow another round to be put into the chamber after I shot a Doe saturday morning....I found out later on after field dressing the Deer and when I got back to Camp I was going to un-load the Rifle?I first removed the clip then went to eject the last shell and there wasn't another round in the chamber...good thing I didn't need a follow-up shot?:mad2:

Then later on that same week after using my gun several times (not shooting it)...just loading and un-loading it with no problems I was out hunting in my stand again friday evening...I had a nice Buck come in and I shot him and he dropped in his tracks.....as soon as I shot him I ejected my shell and rechamber the next round...so I thought I did, again it didn't put another round into the chamber and I didn't notice it until I removed the clip at Camp and tried to eject the last round in the chamber when I found out it didn't allow another round to go in?

Now Usually I watch when I eject a shell out of my Rifle and put another one in to my Rifle but when I'm actually shooting at a Deer I keep my eye on what I have shot at and I don't take my eyes off the Deer so thats why I didn't really notice a potential problem and I've been so busy I never gave it another thought but I think I had better address this problem!

[rquote=1939125&tid=134663&author=Chad]Parkers problem is the one I have always seen. Especially on the stevens 200. If you fill the magazine, it smashes the spring and weakens it, causing feed issues. So I always put three in the magazine, and one in the chamber. Seems to always work justy fine.[/rquote]

I haven't used the gun that much, so I've only had it out maybe 6 or 7 where I had the magazine full for more than an hour. And of those times, the gun was never loaded for more than 7 hours, if even. If I put three in the magazine and one in the chamber, I would have the problem as it's the 1st and 3rd round (from the bottom of the magazine) that cause the problems. The only option here would be to put 2 rounds in the mag and 1 in the chamber, but only the 1st round from the magazine would load. Make sense?

My Savage holds 1 in the chamber and 3 in the clip...I always load the first one by hand/fingers in the chamber then I put in the clip with the 3 other shells. If I would have had to take a follow-up shot this year at any of the Deer I had first shot at I probably would not have gotten another chance if it didn't chamber another shell...I would have been pretty mad if that would have happened?Good thing I'm such an excellent Marksmen/Sharpshooter...? :rof2:

I did notice that the clip is made a little strange...it tappers up smaller like a trianglular shape, not like any of the clips in my Browning or Remington Rifles?I guess a little oil may help it some...that or I could call or e-mail Savage and see what their thoughts were on the subject....that will give me an idea of how well they stand behind their products and their Customer Service?
